I AM DURGA launched the summer of 2018, inspired by Hindu Warrior Goddess Durga. Lisa began research on the Shakti Goddesses at the beginning of the year, and was particularly taken by Durga and Kali --- two goddesses which were honoured for their violent spilling of blood, in the name of saving the world from darkness. While not religious herself, Lisa was inspired to delve deeper into these complex female archetypes, as potential role models across cultures and generations.
The idea of Durga living with love and being 'one with all' until needing to transform into a warrior queen, is a legend that modern women can draw inspiration from. The duality of warrior and lover, and the necessity of both. Sometimes, love is not the answer; war is.
The below film was conceptualised and directed by Lisa, and shot between a studio and her living room, with a group of friends namely, Singaporean poet Deborah Emmanuel, LA-based healer and performing artist Ariel White, Colorado-based performing artist, Leif Newburg, and also starred Lisa herself.
